the Love Letter Band
Summary by Casey DeHoedt
Headed by wordsmith Chris Adolf, the Love Letter Band (a.k.a. Bad Weather California) descends upon Athens from the mile high city of Denver Colorado. With the boasting rights of eight recordings (three under the belt of Happy Happy Birthday to Me Records), The Love Letter Band has certainly made their way around national indie junket.
Love Letter’s music often present a veneer of traditional acoustic-folk. However as a song progresses tradition gets destabilized, disrupted and maybe slightly deconstructed by electric solos not-quite-in-keep with the plunking rhythm of acoustic progressions. Similarly, Adolf’s Appalachian-esque vocal melodies are toned with a cynical, sometimes defeated, quality that push beyond the socially jaded into self-consciously personal. All in all, can we agree that The Love Letter band achieves a natural feel for edginess that Tim Kasher projects can only drool for?
