Tendaberry
Summary by Carrie Dagenhard
Most marriages between rock and hip-hop have ended in nasty divorce. Tendaberry bends these genres into a unique love affair that is sure to impress even the most hesitant of PopFest attendees. This is the four-man band’s first Popfest, even though their genre-blend could fit into any number of music festivals. The band cites 70’s UK punk as one of their influences due to its largely eclectic quality, and this is definitely echoed in their sound. It might be described as a mixture of Al Green and Mission of Burma.
Their high energy live performance will most likely get you up and moving—but other than that, I’m drawing a blank. There is no question that this band will put on an enjoyable performance, but expect not to get anything you expect.
Five Questions with Tendaberry
1. What are your five desert island records?
Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life, The Fall - Hex Enduction Hour, Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions, The Pixies - Doolittle and, just to cheat, an 80 min. CD of the best EP's ever: Mission of Burma - Signals, Calls and Marches, REM Chronic Town, Pavement's Watery, Domestic Ep and Scritti Politti's 4 A-sides.
2. Could you classify your sound for people who haven't heard it before?
Huh, well...we used describe ourselves as Public Image Limited meets Stevie Wonder but soon realized that achieving such a sound would obviously cause seas to turn to blood, locusts to rain from the sky and the world to end. Currently, we sound like Al Green meets Mission of Burma. An equal mix of angular, anthemic post-punk and passionate, melodic soul. Post-punk/soul, if you will.
3. What is your favorite place to play, and why?
There's an house in Atlanta called 141 Moreland that hosts shows that has a communal aspect that I much admire. It's kind of a punk rock utopia with people of all colors coming to chill, watch a show and shoot the shit. There's nothing like playing to 20 people in a tiny un-air conditioned room while angling the neck of your guitar to avoid it being smashed by the drummer and sweating through a perfectly good Talking Heads shirt. And they were barbecuing chicken in the backyard. Heaven. Gotta throw in a good word for the I Can Fly House in ATL too.
4. What is the weirdest thing you take on tour?
Tour? Alas, Tendaberry have yet to tour but be assured that if we did, we'd be taking some weird shit our there with us, Ya'heard?
5. What should people expect from your Athens PopFest performance?
Damn, that's a good fuckin' question.
