Ruby Isle

Summary by Casey DeHoedt

Honestly, this is a white boy techno trio. Now, normally that’s considered a “detriment,” but swearing on any sacred symbol: this doesn’t suck. Not only does it not suck, there’s something inexplicable – nay – magical in how Ruby Isle pulls it off so damn well. There’s a musical similarity to Atom and His Package. However, unlike Atom, Ruby Isle doesn’t need to rely on overtly humorous lyrics to cut the tension between the fine-line of campy versus lame.

Ruby captures the endearing charm that forced the most die-hard Pantera fan to acquiesce to the lovability of the Cars and Devo back in the 80’s. What else is there to say really? It’s very radio, it’s very dancey (with a dash of arena rock), but Ruby Isle reminds you these things don’t matter. So yea, just go ahead and acquiesce even if someone is looking, you’re powerless against it anyway.

Five Questions with Ruby Isle

1. What are your five desert island records?

Computer World, Kraftwerk
The Joshua Tree, U2
Rumors, Fleetwood Mac
Very, Pet Shop Boys
Some Girls, The Rolling Stones

2. Could you classify your sound for people who haven't heard it before?

Arena Rock meets Electropop

3. What is your favorite place to play, and why?

SXSW, Day Parties.

4. What is the weirdest thing you take on tour?

The Fireplace, its for ambience.

5. What should people expect from your Athens PopFest performance?

Anyone who has seen either Mallman or I am the World Trade Center will know half of the story. Those who have seen both individually will probably be scared. It is a volatile combination; two frontmen competing for the spotlight amidst electronic beats and rock guitars.
