What began as a solo project in Lexington, Kentucky has blossomed into a three-piece (sometimes six-piece) folk band comprised of Cody Swanson, Austin Tharpe and Shayne Bates. With a Neutral Milk Hotel feel, the band creates a lo-fi, melancholy, simple and fun sound with bluesy lyrics and delicate banjo and moody horns.

Noisycrane have played shows in their native Lexington. This will be the band's first appearance at Athens PopFest.

Five Questions with Noisycrane

1. What are your five desert island records?

This is tricky... Hmm... OK Computer, A Ghost is Born, Mutations, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, Vespertine.

2. Could you classify your sound for people who haven't heard it before?

Well, I guess we could be described as psych-folk, or freak-folk at times, or just folk-rock. Something to do with folk. indie-psych-folk-rock? heh. I suppose little pieces of each of those.

3. What is your favorite place to play, and why?

My favorite place to play here in Lexington, KY was a venue called the Dame downtown because it was a very friendly bar which helped out local acts and brought in awesome touring bands. That place was recently scheduled to be demolished by the city to let rich developers build another hotel we don't need.

4. What is the weirdest thing you take on tour?

Hmmm... We once took a tin-pan of chocolate chip cookies on a tour of Ohio. The cookies were burnt and left on the floor of the car where they got dirty and were never eaten. The tin is still in my van.

5. What should people expect from your Athens PopFest performance?

Friendly people playing music they enjoy.
