Mary O Harrison
Summary by Carrie Dagenhard
A solo artist with an accompanying band for live shows and recordings, Mary O. Harrison is a sweet voiced multi-instrumentalist with saccharine tunes that are sure to melt your heart. Rising from the ashes of Atlanta quartet Charm School, Harrison recorded her solo album at Bel Air Studios in Athens—the same place where Charm School recorded both of their EPs.
Harrison and her band play a variety of instruments and include an orchestral string section on several songs. Expect simplistic folk and 60’s pop-esque guitar work backing Harrison’s well-trained voice. Mary O. Harrison is a first-timer at Popfest, though she played in 2005 with Charm School.
Five Questions with Mary O Harrison
1. What are your five desert island records?
(1) All Things Must Pass - George Harrison
(2) What's Going On - Marvin Gaye
(3) Court and Spark - Joni Mitchell
(4) You Forgot it in People - Broken Social Scene
(5) Who's Next - The Who
2. Could you classify your sound for people who haven't heard it before?
I'd call it a friendly blend of indie pop and folk
3. What is your favorite place to play, and why?
I'd have to say the EARL in East Atlanta - partly because I can expect to see a lot of friends in the audience, which makes a show feel like a party. Also because even though it feels like home (I live around the corner!), there's a good chance you'll be sharing the stage with a great touring band.
4. What is the weirdest thing you take on tour?
Probably all the crazy vitamins & health supplements I cart around. But the weirdest thing for me NOT to have with me is an iPod. I don't have one. Go figure.
5. What should people expect from your Athens PopFest performance?
songs with heart
