Boy Genius

Summary by Casey DeHoedt

Boy Genius is a quartet drifting to the South from the streets of Brooklyn. Their influences cite a list of bands of pop’s glory age: Go Betweens, Throwing Muses and Galaxie 500. This influence is communicated like a child cherishing an older sibling’s discarded toys. Their perfectly poppy drums, moseying chord progressions, vocal harmonies and sorta-but-not-quite detached vocal melodies create a yearning for blaring a cassette player on the way to the mall; just to grab an Orange Julius.

Their two records, the LP Anchorage and the EP Eureka have received many favorable reviews. Critics often hone in on their college-rock aesthetic. Although it cannot be denied, the music seems to offer a reverence that makes this music fresh to both old and new ears.

Five Questions with Boy Genius

1. What are your five desert island records?

Breeders 'Pod', Pavement 'Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain', The Feelies 'Only Life', Neutral Milk Hotel 'In the Aeroplane Over the Sea', Go-Betweens 'Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express'

2. Could you classify your sound for people who haven't heard it before?

Thriving, melodic pop of the college rock variety.

3. What is your favorite place to play, and why?

Union Hall in Brooklyn, NY because it's cozy and friendly. The soundguy is nice, the crowds are not overly pretentious, and we always have fun when we play there.

4. What is the weirdest thing you take on tour?

Hmm... I'm not sure this is something we should admit to in a public forum.

5. What should people expect from your Athens PopFest performance?

Ramshackle! Ha! And hopefully some infectious head bobbing from the indie pop faithful. We plan on kicking Wednesday off with a bang!
