Amo Joy!

Website | MySpace
Summary by Casey DeHoedt

Amo Joy! is a psychedelic pop quartet from Indianapolis, Indiana, but their playful deception would have you believe they’d just jet-set off an international from 1960’s Manchester. Their music highlights a parallel between the political semi-cynicism that fueled the art crowd’s explorative music in post-war Britain and modern day indie/youth culture.

This four “sometimes five” piece band with its kazoos, slide-whistles, Harrison-esque riffs, and generally happy-go-on-being-lucky mood is well situated in the Athens Popfest aesthetic. Amo Joy! can be seen at Little Kings on August 13th.

Five Questions with Amo Joy!

1. What are your five desert island records?

They're always changing but right now I think that we would all probably agree on, in no particular order, Odyssey and Oracle by The Zombies, Lola vs Powerman and the Moneygoround: Part One by The Kinks, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn by Pink Floyd, Abbey Road by The Beatles, Music from the Unrealized Film Script, Dusk at Cubist Castle by The Olivia Tremor Control

2. Could you classify your sound for people who haven't heard it before?

One time in San Diego someone described us as "All of Disney Land on a secular Noah's arc..." We like that

3. What is your favorite place to play, and why?

In general, houses, especially living rooms, in small towns or college towns. People at those are usually more energetic.

4. What is the weirdest thing you take on tour?

Ourselves and our instruments... we don't have much room for anything else.

5. What should people expect from your Athens PopFest performance?

People should expect to dance a lot, make cool noises with toys that we'll bring for them, and participate in easy sing-alongs.
