The Evolving Sound Of The New Pornographers Comes To Athens

The New Pornographers is a super-group, to say the least – in size and strength. Based out of Vancouver, Canada, the New Pornographers will grace Athens' Georgia Theater on April 17th.

Comprised of Carl Newman, Blaine Thurier, John Collins, Dan Bejar, Kathryn Calder, Kurt Dahle, Todd Fancey and Neko Case, the band is known for its power-pop songs that refuse to leave your head. Their latest album, Challengers, once again reassures its audience that great song writing flows like water in the New Pornographers' camp, as does talent. [read more...]

Lady Antebellum, Georgia Theatre, 4/28/07

You can add another name to the long list of big-time bands with ties to Athens.

While Lady Antebellum’s history as a band is remarkably short, two of its members have a long history together, which involves them both graduating from the University of Georgia.

Marc Broussard's Bayou Soul Invades 40 Watt On April 17

Athens’ 40 Watt Club is known for rock, but on April 17, it will take on the feel of a soul club as Marc Broussard brings his brand of “bayou soul” to Athens. Broussard, who released his second major album, Save our Soul, last year, has built up a rabid fan base. Broussard recently released a five-song EP and will release his third album later this year. Atlanta singer-songwriter Angie Aparo will open the show.

Broussard, who tours relentlessly, broke through with 2004’s Carencro, which featured his biggest hit thus far, “Home.” The Louisiana-based artist fuses elements of soul, blues, funk, rock, and pop together to create his unique sound that harkens back to artists such as Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye. It’s Alive! The Frankenstein Of Rock: A Response To Last Week's Flagpole "Liner Notes"

In the “Liner Notes” section of last week’s Flagpole, Edward Cowan oh-so-poignantly asks the world the question polluting record stores everywhere since 1981: is rock dead? I remember being 15 while relatives and co-workers of the older generation lamented this very issue...

Luke Bryan, Georgia Theatre, 4/24

Rising country-music sensation Luke Bryan performed to a sold out crowd at the Georgia Theatre last Thursday night.

His fan base began to grow while he attended Georgia Southern University and played in bars and clubs on the weekends. The fame he has achieved has taken him from his hometown of Leesburg, Georgia (population 2,633), to performing at sold-out stadiums across the country as an opening act for country superstar, Kenny Chesney. 1b-1 by Dmitry Fyodorov - added 02.05.2008
From the press release:

The year starts off with “1b-1”.

“1b-1” is one of the first tracks Dmitry Fyodorov uploaded to Myspace and one of their most popular tracks that now finally gets an official release. This is a new polished and tighter version of the track making it ready for those dark crazy dance floors you never want to leave.

“1b-1” combines the harshness and rudety of the French scene but bangs in a tighter and even a more melodic side to it. “1b-1” can be the end of the genre that combines distorted baselines with Depeche Mode’s chimer. We are killing the scene with Dmitry Fyodorov.

Dmitry Fyodorov - once a successful attack player in HC CSKA Moscow that mysteriously disappeared after an accident on the ice. Now, nearly 30 years later, his soul has returned in the form of dark, distorted house music to bring havoc to dance floors across the globe.
