So Say We All: The Battlestar Galactica Blog Carnival, vol. 5

Battlestar Galactica 4.5, "The Road Less Traveled," gives us two main stories: Starbuck and the Demetrius lost (or found) in the desert, and Galen Tyrol lost (or found) in spirit.  A lot of folks have drawn the parallel between Baltar's religious movement and Christianity, but James Newberry over at Newbspeak is betting that if Baltar is a Christ-figure, then Tyrol is Judas.  I am hoping he sells out Baltar for thirty cases of spare Viper parts.

Norm Doering at A Blog From Hell, on the other hand, is picky about his religious stories.  He likes the Tyrol storyline because it is about faith, but is worried that the Starbuck storyline will just use God as a mysterious character that conveniently solves the problems of the writers.  I share this concern, as did the Greeks.  The called it Deus ex Machina, but we can call it Deus ex Writer.

Magnusbarfod over at Lagrangian Points concentrates on the Final Cylon debate, but you'll have to check out his entry to find out who he thinks the final Cylon is.  He also has the quote of the week, referring to Baltar's newfound religious zeal as "one of the most protracted mental-breakdowns in television history." How often does a character get to go nuts for four seasons?

MaryAnn Johanson at Flickfilosopher noticed something interesting.  The crew of the Demetrius, arguing over whether to trust the Cylon Loeben, never pauses to examine the fact that one of their crew is a Cylon they trust.  Darn those slippery slopes, anyway.

Amy Vernon at Remote Access points out something interesting about our perspective as the audience: we happen to know that what Loeben told Starbuck is true.  Would we feel differently about the mutiny on the Demetrius if we couldn't validate his claims about the Cylon civil war?

Paul Levinson reminds us that the most significant event this season has been the outbreak of the Cylon civil war.  His entry, at Infinite Regress, also raises some questions about Sharon's motivations.  She is, after all, a Cylon, too.

The mysterious M from Ms. Smarty Pants Know It All has posted an interesting essay about Baltar's possibilities for redemption.  He's finally admitted that he committed serious crimes, and seems to be taking responsibility for them, so where does that leave the fans who want to see him punished?

As your host this week, I felt it was my duty to point out that Baltar and Tory appear to spend more time in bed than I do, and they only exist for an hour each week.  The have sex and then talk about Roslin or Baltar's cult.  That's like having sex, then talking about the Bush Administration and Scientology.  And that, my friends, is no way to live.
