Videos to Eat Cereal To

by Glenn Fullington

So next time you sit down to eat some cereal, eggs, pizza, or left-over taco meat, whatever it is that you sit down to eat, you should watch music videos. "Music videos?" you repeat confusedly, "You mean the segments of film I used to gobble up on MTV when it was a music television station? They still make those?" you ask yourself. Yes, the very same genre of entertainment still exists, but it may take some navigation of the internets to find the real gems. Here are a few to get you started.

Bjork, our famous Icelandic Queen of Pop never fails in the weird department. Her video for "Wanderlust" is a trippy excursion down a blue noodle river with yak puppets and a flailing backpacrobat (coinage). Bjork delivers a sensationally creepy visual arrangement to compliment her equally intrinsic vocal stylings. Watch it.

On the more mainstream end of modern music, Cee-Lo Green and Danger Mouse sit atop their thrones as princes of hip pop. Their video for "Run" features a delightfully retro Timberlake as the host of a dance variety show. Gnarls Barkley own the funk in this high energy groove track. Their album "The Odd Couple" brings much of the same genre blending joints. My mom loves these guys.

The Black Keys hail from Akron, Ohio. What does that tell you? I'm not sure but they know about some rock and roll. "Strange Times" is off their newest album "Attack and Release", a Danger Mouse produced resurrection of a static Ike Turner album. The video involves LASER tag, enough said.

Lastly, I cannot stress how badly you need to see The Mars Volta. "Wax Simulacra" is one of my favorites and although this video's audio doesn't quite make the cut, you can get a sense of their stage presence.
