Almond Milk: The Alternative to the Alternative

by Anna McKee
03.24.2008

I hate soy milk. I have no particular reason for feeling the way that I do, but something about the taste and texture has always kept me from being able to choke it down. I also (for reasons much too long to explain here) absolutely refuse to make the switch to organic milk. For these reasons, I spent twenty years of my life drinking hormone-ridden milk from my local grocery store.

I was never comfortable with the fact that I was putting these unnecessary substances into my body, yet I still couldn't bring myself to stomach soy milk to avoid the hormones. Keeping all this in mind, it is easy to imagine my joy last Thanksgiving when my cousin introduced me to her new favorite thing: almond milk. Almond milk is a tasty treat, similar to soy milk, but (obviously) the taste has a hint of almond to it, which I love. My cousin lives for the sweetened vanilla and chocolate flavors, but it also comes in plain, and unsweetened vanilla. This milk knockoff also has an added benefit for those of us who count calories, for the unsweetened almond milk has fewer calories than soy milk or regular milk. Great by itself, on cereal, or (my personal favorite) in coffee, almond milk is an excellent milk substitute, and an even better soy milk substitute.
