Town and Gown Players Present David Mamet's "Glengarry Glen Ross"by Andre Gallant 02.22.2008 Local theatre group The Town and Gown Players will perform David Mamet's Pulitzer Prize winning drama "Glengarry Glen Ross" this weekend, Feb. 22-24. Performances are Friday and Saturday night at 8 p.m. and a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. Tickets are $5 and no reservation is required. "Glengarry Glen Ross" is the story of Chicago salesmen selling crummy real estate to unsuspecting rubes. The conflict comes from an end-of-the-month competition that threatens the ax to the losing salesmen. The contest and the daily pressures of the sales world cause all sorts of underhandedness. "Glengarry" is perhaps best known for its 1992 screen adaptation directed by James Foley and starring Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon and Alec Baldwin. The film contains a legendary, oft-quoted and curse-filled monologue delivered by Baldwin. Mamet's work is considered difficult for actors due to the quick, bullet like delivery of its lines, and "Glengarry" is considered the masterpiece of his style. The performance is a Second Stage production directed by Marie Bruce. Second Stage refers to a lower budget, short run performance that follows one of grander scale, recently Tennessee Williams' "A Streetcar Named Desire." Performances will be held at the Athens Community Theatre on Grady Avenue, foundjust off Prince Avenue behind the Taylor-Grady House.
