At the ripe age of 23, Anni Rossi makes music that speaks volumes of her musical forte. Armed with the viola and instrumental miscellany, Rossi’s classically trained abilities march through her debut album, Rockwell; a triumph as individual as her name.

Hailing from the windy city, at least for now, Rossi is busy touring all over the United States, encouraging friends to “gather around the table”.

Rossi’s March CD release sparks the seasoned music listener’s ears with her strong, yet sweet voice and distinctive stringed style. Like a female version of Andrew Bird, Rossi’s melodies are complex yet intriguing with lyrics that tell of topics like ecology and glaciers.

The fourth track, “West Coast”, illustrates Rossi’s natural knack to color a vivid tableau of a road trip heading west “turned in to going home.” Rossi’s vocal range is steady, yet swerves in many different turns during climatic parts in most of her songs. Through abrupt endings and careful planting of a constant drum pulse, Rossi engages her listener with lyrics more like poetry than song. On her track “Venice,” Rossi lip buzzes (or something similar), proving her range and grace as a female performer.

Recorded with Steve Albini, Rossi’s Rockwell beats each track with different rhythm, yet still manages to have an unwavering feel to the album’s unity.

Ranging from upbeat rhythms to slow paced ballads of sequenced string playing, Rossi pioneers a fresh voice and skill into the music stream. Her voice, which weaves the album together, sounds like an explorer interested in nature and the open road (all the while maintaining that classical training).

Entwined with basic string plucking and lovely drum beats, Rockwell is incredibly imbued with creativity and a brilliant instrumental showcase. As freezer units and beekeepers parade through Anni Rossi’s musical world, her followers will easily discover the simplicity of life through her personable – yet intriguing – tune and imagination.
