Fred Wolf, The House Bunny
08/25/2008 First week of school got you down? Well, then it is time for some laughs. The House Bunny is the perfect mindless cure for the start-of-school blues. Shelly (Anna Faris) was an orphaned, ugly duckling when she was younger, but now she is a Playboy Bunny and living the life of her dreams. When she finds herself evicted from Hef’s Mansion (she reaches her expiration date), she needs a new place to live. She finds her new home in the Zeta Alpha Zeta sorority house, which is full of socially awkward girls. She helps the girls to realize their potential and save their house, which is in danger of losing its charter. Anna Faris (Scary Movie) does dumb blonde well. While all the airheadedness does get annoying at times, Faris makes up for it with superb delivery of hilarious one-liners. She also has her great name-remembering trick that makes her sound like she’s possessed but will make anyone giggle. The ensemble cast of the sorority sisters works well as a whole. Though some of them have enough character to be recognized as individuals like Emma Stone (Superbad) playing Natalie and Kat Dennings (Charlie Bartlett) playing Mona, the rest are more of a placeholder meant to represent the geekiness of the sisters of the Zeta sorority. And to make it even better, this movie has a supporting cast full famous people that you might not recognize. First you have Rumer Willis, daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, playing Joanne. Then you have American Idol runner-up Katherine McPhee playing Harmony, the pregnant Zeta sister (insert sorority girl joke here). And to top it all off, the cute fratty, Colby, is played by the lead singer of The All-American Rejects, Tyson Ritter. And of course, we get a healthy dose of Hugh Hefner and plenty of his playboy bunnies, but I bet you’re familiar with them. The writing was good; the timing was spot-on and there were few if any slow or boring moments, which gave the movie a great pace. Towards the end, there was a little too much back-and-forth plot to quickly but it was easy enough to follow. This movie is the perfect combo comedy, plenty of sweet romance and yes, guys, a lot of girls in lingerie for your viewing pleasure. So don’t let classes bring you down, ditch your homework for a bit and go see The House Bunny. An hour and a half of this light-hearted comedy will make biology a bit more bearable.
