The University of Georgia club softball team finished its spring season with a 15-5 record and made its first appearance in the National Club Softball Association World Series in Cary, N.C., this past weekend.

The Bulldogs won two out of three games in Thursday’s pool play in the World Series, defeating the Bowling Green and the University of North Carolina squads decisively. They lost to World tournament winner University of Illinois in the third round of pool play.

In Friday’s double-elimination round, Georgia lost to the University of Connecticut in an exciting extra-inning game. They were eliminated from the tournament after losing another close game to James Madison University.

“The game against UConn was the best game we have ever played,” Savannah Harp, president of the team, said. “We fought with everything we had and played great. The games were a great learning experience considering this was our first trip to Nationals.”

Other highlights of the season include a win in extra innings over UNC-Charlotte in the team’s own tournament, the Fall Bulldawg Brawl. Sadie Lingch pitched all nine innings.

Georgia also matched up against rival University of Florida for the first time at a recent tournament at Georgia Southern University.

Despite the impressive record, Harp said the team had some struggles this season. “We are a great team and I know that we can hold our own with anyone. It’s just the errors and mistakes that take us out of the game.”

Goals for next year are to play more as a team and work on reducing errors. The team also plans on making its second appearance at the World Series.

Club teams give student athletes the opportunity to play competitively, but are not as much of a time commitment as NCAA Division I sports. Kelly Kuppenbender, a sophomore from Portland, Ore., said that was one of the reasons she joined the team. “I thought about playing softball in college,” she said, “but I didn’t want it to take over my life. This way I still get a level of competition that I like.”

According to the club sports program’s website, club sports are “designed to serve interests in different sports and recreational activities whether they are competitive, recreational and/or instructional in nature.” Club sports are led by students and receive a modest budget from UGA. They are responsible for raising funds to cover the rest of their travel expenses. The club softball team was founded as a club sport in 2002, and has since competed in tournaments throughout the East Coast.

Harp also said she is proud to be part of the team. “I have never met a better group of girls. I can trust them to push me to be a better softball player and a better person.”

Tryouts for the team will be held at the beginning of both the upcoming fall and spring semesters.
