The Black Keys, Attack and Release

by Rebecca Elmquist
04/21/2008

The fifth studio album from Akron, Ohio-based duo The Black Keys was released on April 1, 2008 and almost a month after its release it is still in my CD player. This album not only redefines their raw, bluesy-soulful style, but was produced by Danger Mouse, Gnarls Barkley’s producer. Danger Mouse has worked with the likes of the Gorillaz, and released a controversial 2004 title, The Grey Album, which mixed music from The Beatles’ White Album and Jay-Z’s Black Album.

The Black Keys consist of Dan Auerbach, vocals and guitar, and Patrick Carney, drums and percussion. They came to our attention in 2002 with their first album release, The Big Come Up. Magic Potion was released in 2006. Attack and Release was a two year wait for fans of the band but could not have come at a better time. Attack and Release was originally to be a collaboration with Ike Turner, but due to his unexpected death in December of 2007 this project could not be completed.

“Strange Times,” their first release from the album is an amazing place to start. This consistent drum/guitar lead characterizes their appealing rock sound. I have heard this song everywhere lately, even on the promo spot for the new episode of Gossip Girl.

Another one of my favorites is “Psychotic Girl.” The piano and banjo lead-in works with the album façade. The psychedelic feel and synthesizer-centered melody produces a groovy sound.

My last recommended cut from the record is “Things Ain’t Like They Used To Be.” This collaboration with country-bluegrass singer Jessica Lea Mayfield was a good conclusion to the CD. Mayfield and Auerbach’s combined harmony not only works for the track, but gives the album a chill, relaxing vibe.

This album is worthy of much praise. If you want to jam out, with pure rock and blues I would definitely recommend this album. Auerbach’s voice is extremely soulful; I can not get enough of it. Other than the fact that there are only 11 tracks, there are no complaints.
