According to Miles Karp, the "emotional energy" of having all their instruments stolen, yet being able to record their first album directly afterward with the help of friends, has made The Suex Effect strong, energetic and directed. The Suex Effect, pronounced "sway effect," chose their name as a play on motion to danceable music. The spelling is cribbed from one of the band member's girlfriend's cat, whose name is Suex.
Ricky Barrett, guitarist for the band, got his first guitar when he was 4 years old, and bass guitarist Karp has played his instrument for 10 years. With experience exploding out of their instruments, the band looks to one another for direction during songs. This band has experience playing together, with Barrett and Daniels having played off-and-on together for eight and a half years while Daniels and Karp have played together for more than a year.
"We kind of did our duo thing for a while," said Karp, explaining that drummer Jonathan Daniels and he had met at a party and "started jamming." Barrett came into the mix because he's known Daniels since middle school. With all of the members bringing their own unique dose of style to the music, Daniels brings the band's energy. Every show is a frenzy for the drummer.
Daniels describes their music as a "psychedelic, funk rock and disco funk" mix.
"It's definitely groove oriented, for sure," Karp said.
Barrett said he wants their audiences to experience "some of the most danceable music you can have in town," while Karp and Daniels played around with the idea of their music being "funkergetic."
"Something fun and energetic," Daniels said.
Daniels said that of the places they have played so far, Amici's Italian Café of downtown Athens is his favorite, "because we can have as much fun as we want."
"The only rule is to play the whole night," he said.
"Amici's is more like a party," adds Karp.
One can find The Suex Effect every second Saturday at Amici's for "The Saturday Sway," a contract they signed with Amici's that continues throughout May.
Their biggest show yet is planned for March 8 at 10 p.m. at the Georgia Theatre. They will be opening up for Boombox.
The band expressed their excitement for this upcoming show, as well as for their Tasty World gig on March 23 when they play with Entropy. "I'm excited about playing with them," Karp said. "I know its going to be a solid night of fun."
The Suex Effect will be releasing their debut album Faces of the Tree in April.
