If you’re looking for a spot to kick back with a cold drink and a warm basket of chips, Mexicali Grille, or “Mexicali” as locals call it, is the perfect retreat. With three locations to choose from in the Athens area, this casual eatery has some tasty American-style Mexican items to satisfy your hunger.
As soon as you enter the West Broad Street location, it is apparent that this Athens hot spot attracts a younger crowd. Seating is available outside, but I chose an inside booth. Several clusters of tables sat in the middle of the restaurant packed with groups of college students.
The menu includes all of the typical Tex-Mex dishes you might be craving, including burritos, tacos, enchiladas, and fajitas. It is a popular choice for students on a budget because most of the entrees range from $5-$8. A bowl of their mouth-watering cheese-dip is a great way to start off the meal.
If you are craving a frozen alcoholic beverage, you’re in luck. Mexicali boasts that it has been voted the “Best Margarita in Athens.” Depending on the day, drink specials are almost always offered at a bargain price. The service was mediocre, but once we ordered, the food arrived at the table in no time.
Reminders cover the restaurant walls that summarize the check splitting policy – which is in essence a "no." Another important detail to keep in mind is that groups of five people or larger automatically pay 15% gratuity. These policies are designed to take the edge off the student crowd.
Mexicali Grille is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. Reservations are not necessary.
