Die! Die! Die!, Promises, Promises

by Allison Carter

Die! Die! Die! has lately been an opening act for Wolfmother, which is what drew me to their CD in the first place. When I first put them into my CD player I wasn’t thrilled, but continued to listen. After that first listen, Promises, Promises got lost in the mess on my desk for a few weeks, but then my friends started mentioning the band. I decided to give it a second chance.

The second time they were a success. They are the perfect medicine when I am in need of music with a more aggressive tone. The best track on Promises, Promises is “Blinding.” The drums are urgent, the voice distressed and the guitar has just the right amount of distortion. There is nothing truly stunning about the lyrics in this song, but we learn that the singer would never lie.

Next, I would recommend “Death to the Last Romantic." This touches my bitter side, so of course the song was one that stuck out to me. The guitar riffs are executed well. They have a nice stop and go feel that gives you time to take a pause during the song. In fact, it mimics the breathing that would be experienced in a high tension moment which comes in a burst of fast drumming around the middle of the song.

For my last recommendation I chose “People Talk," is one of the most sing-a-long friendly of all their songs. Once again the urgency of the drums is what leads the song, with the guitar as a good supporter. Occasionally, the vocals can be a little annoying, but during the chorus the vocals greatly improve.

Overall, Promises, Promises is rather enjoyable. If you love songs that bring energy through the entire CD, I would definitely recommend that you give them a listen. However, if you are looking to relax with a calm song don’t invest your time in listening to the CD.
