Writers' Strike Fallout: What's The Up Side?
04/02/2008 First of all, I want to assure all of you that I hated the absence of my favorite shows just as much as the next devoted couch potato, but there were a number of positive results from the writers' strike. The Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) is essentially a union that represents film, television, and radio writers. Without the WGA, writers would have to fend for themselves on issues like health insurance and other quite essential employee benefits. The WGA also represents writers as a whole in order to obtain fare wage agreements, which was the main cause behind the 100-day strike in 2007. So what was all the hoopla about, anyway? The WGA was striking against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents... you guessed it, the television and film producers. The main issue behind the strike was that writers are not being compensated for the growing number of DVD sales, in addition to sales in new digital mediums, such as IPTV, Internet downloads, streaming, and other on-demand Internet entertainment providers. In early February, the WGA and AMPTP were able to strike a deal that made both parties happy, and just in time for the Oscars. Early February? That was ages ago... why am I not giddy about watching the newest episode of The Office this Thursday night? Well, believe it or not, it takes more than half an hour to make a half-hour show so the wait continues. But cheer up, because that wait won’t be much longer for most shows. Many will be coming back on air in early April. For all those in need of a little situational comedy in their lives, take note: this year’s best comedy, 30 Rock, returns April 10, the Desperate Housewives continue their debauchery on April 6, and The Office will clock in April 10. Looking for something to keep you on the edge of your loveseat? Well, Bones will be digging up dirt again on April 14th, CSI will clue us in on April 3rd, and Smallville will soar back on air April 17th. And if you’re one of those individuals fortunate enough to lack personal drama but instead seek it in weekly installments, I’m happy to announce that Grey’s Anatomy will be healing us again in late April, Gossip Girl will be providing us with plenty of teenage angst on April 21st, House will continue to supply us with medical miracles starting April 28th, and plan to get Lost again on April 24th. This is, an extremely abbreviated list of shows, but a more complete list can be found at TV Guide. I hope I have provided my fellow tormented, television-hungry souls with enough comfort to make it through this final stretch. I have confidence that soon, we’ll all be back to normal and once again avoiding our regular lives in order to watch ones that are ten thousand times more interesting. Happy watching!
