Music Hates You, Tasty World, 3/24/2008

Tasty World was rocked in full force last night. Athens' own Music Hates You headlined a show featuring three acts, all with a similar sound.

Zoroaster, straight from Atlanta, and Minsk, out of Chicago, opened for Music Hates You, playing to friends, family, and the few dozen others who made it out.

Walking into Zoroaster's set was like stumbling upon a spooky forest, fog hindering all sight from far. As we wandered to the stage, the atmospheric-experimental-metal braced our bodies and the stage presences of the trio made themselves known in the heavy smoke, apparently from a fog machine.

Intensity was a common theme, besides hair, for all three bands, but Zoroaster's energy came mainly from their drummer. Creating an incredibly slow tempo for the songs, the drummer was the glue that held them together. In between songs, guitar noise continued as the band prepared for the next jam. It was like floating in a cloud of haze and sound, riffs delicately blurring into mind before erupting into song.

Minsk boasted a sound that was more blues-psychedelic-metal with an emphasis on the heavier side. Strapped with loud guitars and Korg electronics, the quartet thrashed through tunes with radiating screams.

They manipulate a sound that is a metal-electronic fusion, a unique vibe that I remember from seeing The Receiving End of Sirens live.

Music Hates You began their set with a celebratory high-fiving of middle fingers among the band then addressing the crowd with a welcoming “Fuck off!” True metal ensued.

This is when I realized the lead singer checked my I.D. when I went into the bar. “Interesting,” I thought, although I wasn't surprised.

Energy was spitting from all members of the band, obvious excitement playing at home. The lead singer pulsated with the beat through most songs.

The set was great, although ending pretty early on account of an apparent hand injury of the bassist.
