Although Athens is home to a wide variety of delicious restaurants, Doc Chey’s Noodle House is definitely one of the most popular neighborhood favorites. Located in the heart of downtown, Doc Chey’s is nestled between the many bars and stores on Clayton Street. The restaurant’s high ceilings, glass walls, and cheerful colors create a warm effect that invites every passerby to stop in and enjoy a freshly woked bowl of noodles or steaming pot of Thai tea.

The Asian menu is sure to please even the pickiest eater. It contains items in a wide variety of prices and flavors, a high number of vegetarian options, and uses MSG- and trans-fat-free oils.

The dim sum menu boasts delicious and surprisingly large appetizers. One dim sum favorite is Doc’s Lettuce Wraps, which are made up of chicken or tofu, vegetables, and a spicy sauce. Some members of our party ordered this dish, and it was wildly successful with our group. The entrees are divided into Soups, Salads, Noodles, Stirfries, and Doc’s Favorites; many of these are available with your choice of meats or vegetables. I tried the Thai Coconut Red Curry with chicken and brown rice, and I remain convinced that I have never eaten a tastier meal in my life. The coconut sauce was absolutely delicious, though not as spicy as promised, and eggplant was a quirky addition to the mix of vegetables. The portion was enormous, but somehow I couldn’t stop until I had eaten the entire thing. I enjoyed this meal so much that I returned a week later to order the same thing again.

Tea, available by the pot, is one of the more exciting aspects of the menu. I highly recommend it to anyone brave enough to venture away from traditional soft drinks or water. The tea is moderately priced, and refills are on the house. The menu describes the flavors and properties of each tea in detail, so there really isn’t too much risk involved in branching out here.

All things considered, my experience at Doc Chey’s was wonderful. The food was delicious, though everyone agreed that their meals were not as spicy as promised, and the prices were reasonable. The window seats provided a great opportunity for people-watching, the music was eclectic and well-selected, and the staff was amicable and patient with our large and high maintenance party. I highly recommend Doc Chey’s to anyone looking for a good time and a tasty meal.
