If you’re looking for a hearty burger with a touch of flair, Hudson Carter’s Clocked is the place to eat. Locally known as Clocked, this small vintage restaurant is located in downtown Athens on West Washington Street and is reasonably priced, even for the college budget.

Clocked has hanging globe lights on the ceiling with vinyl records mounted around the fixtures. The low lighting and various plants hanging near the windows give the restaurant a very intimate feel. The black and white tiles on the floor round out the retro theme of the restaurant.

Overall, my experience at Clocked was an enjoyable one, despite the fact that it does not provide expansive seating because of its small size. My date and I ate slightly after the prime dinner hour, so we did not have to wait to be seated. We were seated at a table meant for about eight, so we were awkwardly close to another group of five at the other end of a large table. Thus, we did not have the typical private dining experience we expected. Still, because the patrons adjacent to us were in their 20s, as were most of the other groups and couples in the restaurant, it was manageable.

Clocked is known for its inventive burgers and tasty tater tots. It has burgers available in 6, 12 or 18 ounces. For more adventurous eaters, Yac’s Peanut Butter and Bacon burger, currently the talk of the town, is worthy of its reputation. And for the most daring, the Ring of Fire burger is available complete with jalapenos, pepper jack, sour cream and house-made chipotle mayonnaise.

The menu at Clocked is chiefly burgers and melts, but it also includes salads, chili, deep fryer items and a few appetizers. There are daily specials available and a number of vegetarian options. Clocked has a large drink selection including soft drinks, vintage sodas and hot drinks. There is also a small wine list and some eclectic beer options, along with a bar area in the back of the restaurant.

The service at Clocked is the best around. The waitress we had was a peppy, college-aged server who was personable and knowledgeable about the menu. She also went out of her way to ensure that we got our food promptly.

My date ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger with fries while I chose the Aloha Burger, the Friday Daily Special, which is a cheeseburger served with cheddar cheese, pineapple, smoked ham and barbecue sauce, although I ordered the ham on the side. They tasted good and were filling meals. The fries were more home-style than most places serve, and not too greasy. The pineapple on the cheeseburger added a sweet, yet tangy burst of flavor to an otherwise typical burger.

Instead of ordering an appetizer before our meal, my date and I opted to indulge in the Brownie Sundae dessert. It was served in a large, approximately 24 oz., bowl with brownies, vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, whip cream and cherries. It was the perfect ending to a great meal!

One of the best qualities of Clocked is that it is very reasonably priced, especially for those on a college budget. The average combo meal, which includes a burger and fries or coleslaw, is $7.75. Tater tots can be added to any burger or melt for a mere 25 cents, and a side salad or a cup of chili can be added for just 50 cents. All burgers and melts are also available a la carte for $1.50 less if you’re looking for a quick bite to eat between meals or if you’re tight on cash and still want a solid burger. Melts range from $3.75 to $6.00 a la carte. Salads are available for $4.75 to $6.75.

You can eat at Clocked seven days a week. Sunday through Thursday it is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and on Fridays and Saturdays it’s open until 11 p.m.
