In a town filled with restaurants, Shokitini stands out as a sushi bar with the atmosphere of a chic night-club, while providing a wide array of sushi, entrees and drinks.
The modern interior of the restaurant, located on Clayton Street, includes a lit up bar and large, royal blue booths. Unique lighting fixtures also add to the restaurant's trendy appeal. Shokitini doubles as a karaoke bar, and private, lounge-like rooms can be rented by the hour.
My group of six sat comfortably in a huge, rounded booth, and we were greeted by a lively waitress who began by taking all of our names. She called us by name as she served us throughout the evening, which was a nice, personal touch.
You order by individually marking selections on paper of menus at the table. This makes splitting checks simple, which is often necessary among groups of friends.
Shokitini has a variety of appetizers and salads. While my friends enjoyed traditional garden salads with ginger dressing, I decided to try the Kani Su salad with crab meat and cucumber. The salad looked and tasted great, and for around $4, was the perfect start to the meal.
The menu has numerous sushi rolls to choose from, ranging in price from about $4 to $14. While the menu has very detailed descriptions of the contents of each roll, our waitress was unable to answer some questions we had regarding specific ingredients. Thus, we steered clear of some choices that included items unusual to us, such as barbequed eel and salmon skin. I ordered the Salmon Shokitini Roll, which has avocado inside and is topped with fresh salmon.
Shokitini will also appeal to those who may not be sushi eaters since the menu offers a variety of noodle dishes and entrees, such as steak, which are priced at around $12 to $25. In addition, side dishes such as fried rice or an extra serving of fish can be added to any order.
My group could not leave without taking a peek at the dessert menu. We decided to split the fried banana dessert, which was an excellent choice. It was served with scoops of vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce and whipped cream.
Shokitini proved to be a great choice for our girls’ night out, but the ambiance would be perfect for any occasion. Shokitini is open from Monday to Saturday from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. It is open on Sundays from 5 p.m. until midnight.
