I can't remember the last time I found myself smiling the whole way through a concert, but watching and listening to Jukebox the Ghost, I couldn't help myself.

Jukebox the Ghost, a three-piece from Washington, D.C., put on a show that is pure fun, energetic, and undeniably enjoyable. Having just released a full-length album Live and Let Ghosts, the band acknowledged Friday night's show at the 40 Watt as their Athens CD premiere.

The band sounds surprisingly full and robust for a three-piece. Rambunctious instrumentals, a blend of guitar, drums, and piano, are interspersed with lead vocalist and pianist Ben Thornwell's tickling of the ivories. A classically-trained pianist and an avid bookworm, Thornwell's songs display a fun sense of wordplay. Jesse Kristin's drums and tambourine take the place of a bassist, giving the band a frantic and feisty beat.

The subject matter of Jukebox the Ghost's songs ranges from love to the apocalypse. "My Heart's the Same" is a beautiful ballad, but set against guitarist Tommy Siegel's three-part "Fire in the Sky" / "Where Are All The Scientists Now" / "A Matter of Time", it illustrates the band's extensive musical and lyrical ability.

Their sound is quirky and somewhat cynical, but overall intelligent. Reminiscent of early Ben Folds Five, Jukebox the Ghost is clearly in love with what they are doing. Thompson's voice will at times remind listeners of Keane, but the group is far more upbeat than the European piano-based band.

For an avid concert-goer, there is nothing worse than watching a band that doesn't look like they're having fun on stage. Jukebox the Ghost is the exact opposite. The first band of the night, opening for the Modern Skirts along with The Old Ceremony, Jukebox the Ghost hit the ground running with "Hold It In." Thornwell's strong vocals, piano, and claps set the mood for the evening: exuberant, lively, and energetic.

Jukebox the Ghost will be performing at this year's SXSW festival and will be on tour throughout the spring and summer. Until they find their way back to Athens, check out their CD Live and Let Ghosts.
