Paint The Tabernacle Green: Flogging Molly Hits Atlanta

by Stephanie Jackson
03/02/2008

St. Patrick’s Day comes early this year, as Celtic punk band Flogging Molly invades the Tabernacle on March 6 as part of their annual Green 17 Tour. This year will be even more spectacular, as the band promotes their new album, Float, which will be released on March 4, by SideOneDummy Records. Their fourth studio effort, it is the first to be written and recorded almost entirely in Ireland. The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band and The Mighty Stef will be opening.

Flogging Molly, known for their mixture of traditional Celtic instruments like mandolins and accordions with their own brand of Los Angeles punk, have been slowly making a name for themselves since the late ‘90s when Dublin-born front man Dave King first formed the band on his arrival to California. Sold-out shows have been following the band around the country since they were first featured on the Warped Tour in 2004.

They have since played on four of the five most recent tours, and have been featured on soundtracks for “Mr.& Mrs. Smith,” “Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4,” HBO’s “Weeds” and the compilation CD “Rock Against Bush.”

Taking their name from Molly Malone’s, the pub that helped them get their start, the band’s seven members range from their early-20s to 40s, adding another layer to their already eclectic background. Inspired by such varying acts as David Bowie, The Clash, The Pogues, The Dubliners and Johnny Cash, for whom they wrote the song “Don’t Let Me Die Wondering,” Flogging Molly brings traditional music to the modern era and updates it with their own style.

From the biographic “Black Friday Rule” to upbeat pirate-like songs such as “Salty Dog” and somber pieces like “Far Away Boys,” their repertoire is extensive. Their Celtic roots are never abandoned, though, with songs such as “To Youth (My Sweet Roisin Dubh),” a tribute to King’s homeland, and “With a Wonder and a Wild Desire” which chronicles music’s use during the trials of the Irish people.

The Tabernacle is just one stop on their two month, 30-city tour, which will turn into a world tour this summer. The show promises to be a mix of their defiant, supercharged punk and their inspired, solemn works: a true mix of old and new. So if you’re into the Dropkick Murphies, Against Me!, Violent Femmes or are already an established fan of Flogging Molly, head out to the Tabernacle. Doors open at 7 p.m. for all ages.
