You Might As Well Have Fun Doing It: A Q & A With Sia
03/04/2008 Sia Furler is making her way through the States, and making noise as she goes. Better known as just Sia, this Australian-born vocalist has earned critical acclaim for her soulful voice. Her first two solo albums were huge successes in Europe and Australia. Sia’s music reached L.A. in 2005 where her song “Breathe Me” was featured in the hit HBO series, Six Feet Under and, later, at the 2006 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. She toured the U.S. in 2006, promoting her second album and the Six Feet Under fifth season DVD. Now she’s back and gaining even more attention. Her voice is beautiful - rich, mature, sultry. Her image is a little quirkier. Sia’s sense of fun is obvious on her official website. Each page is full of colorful doodles worthy of the best Microsoft Paint artists, but despite the silliness, she has some serious talent. Sia is currently on tour promoting her new album, released in January 2008. Through the wonders of e-mail, I was able to ask Sia a few questions about her music and her newest album. And I got some interesting answers. AE: How’s the tour going? Any interesting mishaps or fond memories in the making? SF: Well right now I'm in Minneapolis with what I like to affectionately refer to as 'uh oh bum'. Can't get fonder than that. It could also lend itself to a possible mishap at tonight’s show. Fingers crossed. AE: You’ve recently performed on Late Night with Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Kimmel Live. How was that? SF: Excellent, fun, totally over-adrenalising. AE: Your voice is so naturally soulful. Was singing always a passion? SF: Yes, yes it was. AE: Who or what inspires your music? SF: Dog. Dog is my dog. I'd like to thank Dog. AE: Your music has been labeled pop or indie, and your voice compared to Sarah McLachlan’s. How would you label yourself? SF: Thrush metal. Or um, easy listening. AE: Your latest album, Some People Have Real Problems, was released in January. How was recording this album different from the others? SF: It was on a different continent and we did do silly dances a lot more between takes. AE: Do you have a favorite song off the album? SF: "Academia." AE: What is your favorite part of performing live? Do you have a favorite part of the show? SF: In between songs when I get to have fun with the audience. AE: If you could do something other than sing, what would you do? SF: Love dogs full time. AE: Why should people come see your show? SF: Because I could be handing out meat sticks that night. Pot luck. You can check out Sia on March 10 at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta. The show starts at 8 p.m., and maybe there'll be meat sticks! Comments [post a comment]Comments are closed |
