Don't Blow It This Time: Last Minute Valentine's Day Gifts

by Mary Catherine Brutz

Valentine’s Day is drawing near. Have you bought your boyfriend or girlfriend a present yet? Although this particular holiday isn’t exactly the most looked-forward-to day of the year for many people, buying the person you love a little something will probably do more good than harm. The ideas below can all be purchased in Athens or online and most are suitable for both men and women. The affordability of each of these gifts makes them perfect options for the college budget.

1. Tickets for a concert, comedy show or sporting event. You can’t go wrong with any kind of tickets. The Braves season opener goes on sale soon and so many musicians and bands come to the Atlanta area, you’re sure to find something to please the tastes of your boyfriend or girlfriend. Blue Collar Comedy Tour alum Ron White will also be coming later this spring. Just go to TicketMaster to see what’s coming to Atlanta. Of course, there are always concerts in Athens that you could purchase tickets for as well.

2. Dinner and a movie at < href="http://www.thenationalrestaurant.com" target="_blank">The National and Cinẻ. These two places offer a great deal on Monday and Tuesday evening when you can purchase a three-course meal and movie ticket for $25/person. Even though Valentine’s Day is on a Thursday this year, this gift brings the cliché dinner and a movie date to a whole new level. Be sure to make reservations ahead of time though to make sure you can enjoy your meal before the movie begins.

3. Netflix subscriptions. A wonderful idea for movie lovers is a subscription to Netflix. You can choose to give however many months you want as well as pick from different plans: one movie a month unlimited, two movies a month unlimited, etc. This idea can be as cheap or expensive as you wish, but is sure to please nonetheless. Visit their gift page for more information.

4. Downtown gift certificates. The Athens Downtown Development Authority has gift certificates available for purchase at their office or online. Available in any amount, starting with $5, these gift certificates are redeemable at most downtown locations from clothing stores to restaurants and bars. If you’re lucky, the person you give this gift to may choose to include spend part of it on you.

5. Cake from Cecilia Villaveces Bakery. If you’ve ever been to The Last Resort then you more than likely know that their desserts are just about anyone’s favorite. The bakery where these cakes are made is located on Milledge Avenue and you can purchase them yourself. Six-inch cakes start $13 and there are many flavors from which to choose. Red velvet is a great choice for Valentines Day. These cakes are both delicious and a great gift that both of you can enjoy. Call (706) 543-3308 for more information.

6. Aromas Wine Tasting. This dark little wine bar located in Five Points has great wine, beer, cheese and atmosphere. For $10 you can choose four different wines to taste, whether you want all red, white or a combination. The staff is extremely knowledgeable about everything on the menu. Aromas also offers desserts, coffee and appetizers such as cheese plates and hummus.

7. Magazine subscriptions. Many people fail to realize how cheap it is to purchase magazine subscriptions as opposed to buying them off the shelf. If your boyfriend or girlfriend always reads a particular magazine, purchasing a subscription for them is the same as giving them a present every month. With so many publications available, this is a great gift idea for anyone.

found a TERRIFIC and inexpensive gift that won't wilt in a week, or tarnish in two, it's the friendship stone (www.thefriendshipstone.com) perfect for anyone from you! It will stay with your friend and loved one forever, reminding them of you. And believe me it is in your budget! Check it out! I also saw another cool thing on their site - you can send a "virtual friendship stone" for fun as well as having the real one.
I also noticed that their valentine sale is still going on - 14% discount with the coupon code "valentine" when checking out.
Hey this is a great gift to send on Valentines! Original and Unique!
