Day Trips From Athens

by Mary Catherine Brutz
05/24/2008

As amazing as the University of Georgia’s football season was this fall, the weekly games consumed nearly every weekend and pushed aside other events, plans and trips. Now that spring is upon us, these escaped ideas can reenter our minds and start to become a reality.

For many, staying in Athens, relaxing on the couch and hanging out with friends is the norm. While this rest is probably well-deserved and essential, there are many interesting places nearby to discover. From wine tasting to laser shows, the following locations provide something for everyone. And most importantly, each trip can easily be completed to the fullest in one day, putting you back in Athens to resume your typical weekend activities. So when making plans this spring, take the time to consider all of the unique cities and sites our state has to offer.

Chảteau Ẻlan

Nestled north of Atlanta and only 35 miles west of Athens, this all-encompassing resort, spa, winery and golf course boasts to combine “French provincial and Southern hospitality,” according to their Web site.

Things to do: For a day trip, consider taking the guided tour of the winery that includes a tasting of four different wines. The cost is $5 and on Saturdays tours begin every hour from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Another idea for women is to reserve a manicure at the spa, which offers a variety of choices with prices ranging from $35-$45. There are spa options for men too, but sticking with a college budget can be difficult. Try the head, neck and shoulder massage for $50. Another new addition is the Rock Climbing and Ropes Course. With two, two-hour sessions on Saturdays and a cost of $40 per person, this new addition to the resort is a great possibility.

What to eat: Chảteau Ẻlan is home to eight restaurants, but for those on a budget, try Paddy’s Irish Pub, The Clubhouse or The Carriage House, each of which offer affordable salads, sandwiches and burgers.

Madison, Ga.

Just a 40-minute drive south of Athens, Madison, Ga. is a quaint little town that offers a variety of shops and restaurants. Many people describe Madison as “walking through a Norman Rockwell painting,” according to their Chamber of Commerce Web site.

Things to do: Strolling around town and looking through the different shops is a great way to meet locals and get a good feel for Madison. Dig in deep for some rare reading at Dog Ear Books or search through the eclectic Laughing Moon clothing and gift shop. This small town is full of antique stores as well, which may be out of a college student’s price-range, but worth a look nonetheless.

What to eat: There are many places to eat in the downtown area. Just walk around and browse to see what sounds the best. Madison Drug’s Old Fashioned Fountain is an 1800’s soda fountain and grill for traditional American grub. There are also a variety of cafés and an Amici pizza restaurant just like the one in downtown Athens. In the afternoon, grab an ice cream at Scoops Ice-Cream Shop.

Stone Mountain Park

Located just short of 1 ½ hours east of Athens, Stone Mountain Park offers a plethora of entertainment and attractions. Covering 3,200 acres, this park is one of Georgia’s main tourist attractions.

Things to do: For $25, you can purchase an All-Attraction pass, which covers everything from the Skyride up to the top of the mountain to a 4D Theater, Pedal Boats and two museums. Tickets to each attraction individually are also available. Going to the summit of Stone Mountain is a must. There is a 1.3 mile trail to the top if the Skyride is not for you. Demonstrations of glass blowing and candle making are given throughout the day. The park also offers walking paths, hiking trails and many picnic areas. To get the most out of your money, stay for the Lasershow Spectacular, an amazing projection on the façade of the mountain. These shows begin April 5.

What to eat: Although there are places to eat within the park, on a cool spring day your best bet is to bring a picnic lunch. Pack something before you leave Athens or stop along the way. With so many outdoor places to eat, you will save money and be able to enjoy the park more by bringing your own food.

Helen, Ga.

Helen, Ga. is a re-creation of an alpine village, located about an hour and 15 minutes north of Athens. This cobble-stoned town is also home to the longest Oktoberfest in the South, celebrating from September to November. With unending shops and restaurants, Helen’s Cherokee, German and American influences make it quite a unique place to visit. It is also a great town for those who love the outdoors.

Things to do: Start the day off in Clarkesville, Ga. at Sunburst Stables, about 20 minutes from Helen, for a horseback ride through the mountains (www.sunburststables.com). For $30 you can ride for 1 ½ hours. From there you can drive into Helen and a great stop is the Alpine Antique Auto and Buggy Museum. If the weather is nice, going tubing, sliding through the water park or playing miniature golf are other options. Of course, walking around downtown Helen through all the shops is another great afternoon activity.

What to eat: Try the Troll Tavern, a restaurant that sure to please anyone with their selection of dishes with global influences. Buy some chocolate and other sweets at Hansel & Gretel Candy Kitchen. The Nacoochee Grill also offers affordable dishes ranging from wraps and burgers to quesadillas and crab cakes.
