Game Day Fashion Show: Finding Unique Variations On A Theme

In the words of Larry Munson, “Glory, Glory to Old Georgia, heroes have graced the field before you... and now a new breed of Bulldawg stands ready to take the field of battle... understanding that there is no tradition worthy of such envy, no institution worthy of such Glory as the University of Georgia... two words express the sentiment of the entire Bulldawg Nation: GO DAWGS!”
And as our Georgia Bulldawgs tee it up between the hedges and are making their opponents look like frail fashion models down on the field, our lovely Greek and non-Greek women and men are hosting their own fashion show up in the stands.
“I always like to watch the fans fill in the student section to see what new kinds of cute clothes all the girls are wearing,” says Rachelle Hoehn, a clarinet player in Georgia’s own Redcoat Marching Band. “We’re always in the stands before everybody else, and we sit right next to the student section,” Hoehn said.
But where do all of these classy game day outfits come from? Lucy Noell Croxton of Kappa Delta tells us, “I usually go to little boutiques and try to get things that are different than everyone else... I usually don’t go into a store looking to find game day clothes, but if I see a cute red and black dress that sticks out to me, then I will get it!”
Croxton mentioned that some of these boutiques are a little more expensive than others; it just depends on where you go. Claire Doiron of Chi Omega mentioned some specific stores where she likes to shop for game day clothes: Red Dress Boutique, Kinnucan’s, Fortson’s, and Heery’s.
Jessica Belcher of Gamma Phi Beta said that McColly’s and Sabina’s were also good for game day shopping because they are in downtown, close to both the dorms and Milledge. Both Doiron and Belcher said they also enjoy Nordstrom and Rampage when looking for these outfits.
Belcher, when asked where she preferred to shop the most, said, “Convenience I guess is the reason I shop downtown. Plus, shops in Athens know what girls like and are sure to have a variety of red and black dresses that are hard to find elsewhere... It’s always a nice feeling to be wearing something no one else has on for once!”
When asked what type of clothing they like for football games, everyone seems to agree with Bradi Dixon, also of Gamma Phi Beta, in that, “Cotton is cooler!”
And now to the question most women ask themselves everyday: What about shoes? Kaitlin Conway of Delta Zeta summed it up by saying comfort is key! Conway said, “I need to be comfortable to cheer on my Dawgs. I usually wear some of those $5 Old Navy flip flops in black, red or white... NO HEELS! It’s just not worth it!”
Opinions on jewelry for game day varied based on personal style, but most, like Belcher, suggested staying away from anything too big or heavy. Belcher said that big jewelry often makes her feel weighed down in the summer heat. Conway suggested Forever 21, Just the Thing, or the Funky Monkey in Marietta for game day jewelry buying.
And for our male counterparts, Dixon said that her boyfriend usually wears jeans and a polo shirt to the football games. Belcher says that most college guys wear red, black, or khaki pants and white shirts of some kind with Sperry’s or flip flops for shoes.
Conway said, “I think a lot of guys do this because of the way they are raised and the whole ‘southern gentleman’ style. They are living up to the tradition passed down through Georgia fans in the past by dressing up to cheer on the Dawgs.”
