Three times a bridesmaid, never a bride. Try 27 times a bridesmaid, and every time the dress is just downright ugly. The screenplay writer of The Devil Wears Prada has another comedic success with this hilarious tale of a woman in love with weddings...and her boss.
Katherine Heigl stars as Jane, a high-strung, overly giving wedding planner who has been a bridesmaid 27 times. She is also hopelessly in love with her boss, George (Edward Burns.) But when George meets and falls in love with Jane’s pampered, high maintenance little sister Tess, Jane faces her 28th time as a bridesmaid. Throw in a ton of sexual tension with cynical wedding writer, Kevin (James Marsden) and you have got yourself a wonderfully delicious romantic comedy.
Heigl has proven again and again that she is an amazing actress, judging by her Emmy win for her role as Izzie on Grey’s Anatomy and her role in last year’s hit comedy Knocked Up. She gave it her all again in this film. Her excellent portrayal of her slightly offbeat character and her awesome delivery of sidesplitting one-liners set the perfect tone for this heartfelt comedy.
James Marsden, best known for his role as Scott Summers a.k.a. Cyclops in the X-Men performance, delivers a stellar performance as Kevin, the wedding columnist. He and Heigl just ooze chemistry in their scenes together, especially in their drunken rendition of “Bennie and The Jets.”
Funny, but in his last three movies (Hairspray, Enchanted, 27 Dresses) he has had to sing. I officially vote that he should sing in all his movies, because damn if he’s not sexy when he’s singing.
There are a few clichés sprinkled throughout the movie, but what romantic comedy doesn’t have a cliché or two? Despite that, the movie was very original and refreshing overall.
Ladies, 27 Dresses is the perfect movie to go see with your girlfriends, but look out, because afterwards you may be tempted to jump on something and sing, “Bennie and the Jets.” That is if you can figure out the words.
