The Vandelles, Self-Titled EP

by Allison Carter
01/24/2008

“Well if you think you can come on lets dance.”

I’d surely take The Vandelles up on that offer. They are love at first sight for anyone who loves noir Rock n’ Roll. I like it because it just that good.

The Vandelles’ self-titled EP released in October 2007, has five dark and beautiful tracks for the listener's pleasure.

“Swell to Heaven” would make even the squarest of human beings feel hip. The normal hatchback or SUV won’t suit this song. Neither will winter weather. You’ll need a convertible and a warm spring day to fully appreciate the song. This song most closely resembles surf rock. Throughout the song you hear the sweet guitars play to the sounds made popular during the 1960’s. It is a song that would most appropriately fit the beach parties seen in the classic movie Gidget. However, they do put more of a modern twist on this perfect beach song.

A mind numbing, distorted amplified guitar in “Lovely Weather” will leave you either loving or hating the song. Vocals are spoken seductively smooth out of the singer’s mouth. Then the deciding factor on how the listener feels about the song comes, which is the guitar. After the first introduction of the vocals and guitar not much changes.

The last song on the EP, “Dead Wave” is more distorted noise than anything. Nevertheless a listener who loved the first four songs couldn’t refuse themselves the same amount of pleasure the last track brings. You’ll get lost in the hard garage rock sound which drowns out any lyrics in the song.

Once the song ends give the track about seven minutes and you’ll hear that The Vandelles have left you a surprise. The bonus track, more or less, is just a compilation of sounds until the jingle of a tambourine brings them all together.

As the final note of the EP comes to an end you’ll feel one hundred times cooler because through their music The Vandelles will have created you the perfect Noir/Surf Rock n’ Roll persona.
