Alright, ladies. Grab your girlfriends, a box of tissues and wipe off your mascara. Be prepared to cry and then laugh through your tears at P.S. I Love You.
This film, based on the novel by Cecelia Ahern, is one of the best romantic comedies that I have seen in years. This is saying a lot, since I am a romantic comedy junkie. The plot is original, which is rare for a film of this genre. The dialogue is witty and wonderful, and the characters’ personalities are so big they fill up the screen and envelope the audience.
P.S. I Love You starts with Holly and Gerry Kennedy (Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler) in a huge no-holds-bar fight. They of course make up, if only because it's hard to stay mad at a hot Irishman dancing around in shamrock boxers. In this single scene, the actors deliver such convincing performances that you feel like you have known these people for years.
Flash forward to Gerry’s funeral. He has died of a brain tumor, which we didn't know he had. But, he couldn’t leave without saying goodbye, so he sends Holly letters to help her get over him and start her new life, which is where the fun begins.
We not only get to see the journey Holly takes to move on but also the important moments that make Holly’s adventures so bittersweet.
Gerard Butler is quite lively playing a deceased man. Prior to this he has played dark, aggressive characters such as King Leonidas in 300 and The Phantom in the 2004 version of The Phantom of the Opera. This is a stark turn for him; here he is light, happy, fun and sweet. It is nice to see that Butler is not only willing to play softer characters but that he also does it so well.
Hilary Swank gives an outstanding performance as the grieving widow. Swank has proved many times that she can play extremely multi-faceted characters, including her two Oscar-winning roles for Boys Don’t Cry and Million Dollar Baby. This may be a more light-hearted film, but she still delivers the goods. One minute she has you in tears and the next she will crack you up.
The movie also includes memorable performances by Harry Connick Jr., Kathy Bates, Lisa Kudrow and Jeffry Dean Morgan, just to name a few. Morgan, who is best know for his role as Denny on TV's Grey’s Anatomy is especially good in his first major big screen appearance.
If the great acting and wonderful story isn’t enough to entice you ladies to the theater, you get a good fifteen-second shot of Morgan’s bare butt, and that is definitely worth the price of the movie ticket.
