Steve Smith, formerly of Dirty Vegas, heads in a fresh direction with his debut solo album, This Town.
After his split from Dirty Vegas, Smith, as lead singer of the Grammy winning British house band, was looking to go in new directions musically and geographically. While visiting the U.S. for a wedding, he fell in love with Massachusetts and was inspired to jump the pond. He left London with his wife and daughter and settled into the Boston area where Smith immediately set to work writing a new album.
With help from producer Anthony Saffery, and with inspiration from his new life in American suburbia, Smith created This Town.
“It's about outgrowing where you live and seeing other parts of the world," Smith said of the album.
This Town is a fresh mix of Smith’s skills as an internationally recognized DJ and as a singer/ songwriter.
The first track on This Town features the voice of actor John Savage, perhaps best known from the 1978 film, The Deer Hunter, speaking on life and change. The wife of one of Smith's album producers ran into Savage in a local furniture store and told the actor about the disc. She asked if Savage wanted to contribute to the project, and he agreed to record voiceovers.
What follows in the next 11 tracks are overlapping layers of past and present. The song, “That Town,” echoes Smith’s London electronica days while “Smile” and “Sleep Like a Lover” show Smith’s strengths as an acoustic songwriter.
To those who loved Dirty Vegas, This Town will give them new insight to the band’s former lead singer, Steve Smith. These days, he’s moved into a brand new town.
