College Football: UGA Gets Hawaii In Sugar Bowl

by Christopher McIntosh
12/02/2007

Well, we got what we deserved.

In some sort of weird, karmic justice our Georgia Bulldogs will be playing...

Hawaii.

In the Sugar Bowl.

I realize speechless is an inappropriate state in a written column, but I've got nothing.

It's almost like the BCS looked at the two teams who had designs on the national title game and said, "here, you two play each other. Hell, call it the JV national championship for all we care. Just stay out of the way and be sure not to cause any trouble".

UGA was number 4 the week prior to the setting of the BCS championship game. 1 and 2 lost.

Yet somehow without playing a down we went (de facto) down in the polls and fell out of contention for the national title.

Compounding my confusion, we'll be watching a team who was ranked well below us - number seven - win the national title by beating up on a poor, overrated Ohio State team.

And that team is from our own conference.

I realize this makes sense in a strange sort of way. I realize that I even expected this outcome. I didn't realize just how silly it was the more I thought about it.

Hawaii? Really?

Can you imagine being a UGA player right now? Sure, your coaches all told you that you weren't going to make it, but still, until they make the announcement, it's not actually over. You don't feel it. But you're going to get the chance to prove your worth on the national stage come January in the traditional Winter home of the SEC champion.

Against Hawaii.

Hats off to Hawaii for going undefeated. Hats off to Colt Brennan for making everyone forget about his [edited] and the [edited] and reemerge as a legitimate quarterback. In a system where QBs set college records and then are unable to find gainful employment post college plying their trade (Timmy Chang, paging Timmy Chang, Timmy Chang, please pick up the white courtesy phone) Colt Brennan has excelled.

If there were justice in this world Hawaii would be in the title game. At least, that's what the Warriors would have you believe. And they've got a point.

But. Their strength of schedule is horrendous. They've beaten virtually no one except Washington and they did everything possible to lose that game at home. In fairness, they do try and schedule good teams, but these teams have no interest in playing them because it's lose-lose. Lose and you, well, lose. Win, and you've beaten... Hawaii. It'd be like playing home run derby once a week for MLB players. For most teams who don't see four and five wide receiver sets on every down all it would do is confuse them and potentially get them into bad habits that could ruin them for the rest of the season.

They did beat everyone put in front of them. And that should count for something. But the aforementioned strength of schedule is impossible to ignore.

I take that back. Has anyone looked at Ohio State's strength of schedule? Quality Wins? Hawaii has a pretty decent argument to be miffed at not being in title contention when they have fewer losses then the consensus pick for the game and a similar strength of schedule. It's just the WAC doesn't have the history of teams like the Maize and Blue - a history that now includes the worst upset in NCAA history.

Hawaii made it in the backdoor. They play Playstation football and they do it surprisingly poorly. Against that schedule they should have been putting up (and how's this for a demonstration of just how screwed up this year was) Kansas type numbers every time out.

They didn't.

So you're a UGA player. You've got a month of practice to prepare for a system team based on a bit of gimmickry and a bit of gambling principle. Two ways to win a war. Win the battles you think you can or gamble it up--battle at every point you can. So long as you win two out of three, you're ahead. They're going to throw it, throw it, and throw it some more. If you're a linebacker primarily designed to go against the run, you might as well hang up your pads and get ready for next year. If you're a defensive back, you better eat Christmas dinner tomorrow because you need to be light on your feet and at your fighting weight come January.

I hope Richt uses this to complete his transformation into a younger version of his mentor, Bobby Bowden. Pull out all the stops. Penalties after each time we score. Talk about nothing but how your squad has been disrespected and how its time to show these interlopers just what UGA is about so next year, when you're rolling through the conference, they remember their insolence.

I do know two happy people on the Georgia side, however. Knowshon Moreno and Thomas Brown. They may run for a combined half mile against Hawaii's defense.

Ultimately, though, what does it prove? The number four team in the country, no SEC championship shot, and a JV national title game against a team that probably shouldn't even be in the BCS. Hell, even if we win, we may still end the year at number 4.

I hope Richt's transformation into a "player's" coach is going to be completed, because he's going to need to motivate for this game. This is Hawaii's Superbowl (to mix metaphors). He needs to convince the Bulldogs that this is their one chance to prove just how wrong the voters got it. That if they had the stones to rank UGA ahead of LSU and OU last week they should stick with it regardless of what it means for bowls and championship seeding.

But still, no matter how you slice it, it's (just) Hawaii.

No one schedules them for a reason.

Dear Mr. McIntosh,

Aloha from the Big Island. Can't wait to check in with your paper on January 2nd. I sincerely hope you will re-visit this article, note that you were wrong, and then publicly eat a large helping of humble pie.

I realize that you have to sell papers in Georgia, but to assume such a condescending tone about the Warriors, the WAC, and the skill (or lack therof) of QB Colt Brennan only identifies you as a confused and frustrated member of the sour grapes brigade.

You say hats off to Hawaii for going undefeated and then make it sound as though they backed into all their victories by accident. The fact remains that they won every game in their division, a group of teams arguably evenly matched. This accomplishment was not equaled by Georgia or any other team in their evenly matched divisions. If going undefeated doesn't mean anything then where do those teams that were defeated stand? You can't have it both ways so don't try.

I don't know whether Hawaii will win the Sugar Bowl but I believe it will happen. So does the rest of the state and so do the Warriors. The team has heart, guts and skill and they EARNED their spot against Georgia by putting together a season that people will remember long after your article is forgotten. Win, lose or draw, the Sugar Bowl's going to be a great game contested by two excellent teams. Try to put a little of their spirit into your writing and go easy on the whining.

Sincerely,

Douglas M. MacIlroy
Kamuela, HI,

P.S. The only Georgia players that are going to run for a combined half a mile (or more) while playing Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl are going to be on the defense. Put that in your January 2nd article.

Aloha!

Hawaii has beaten virtually no one except Washington...Looks like you forgot about Boise State, #19 in the country that week.

Also, Hawaii should be putting up Kansas numbers? I guess you're right, they didn't put up Kansas numbers...They put up numbers better than Kansas all season. Check the stats, Hawaii has the #1 offense in the country, besting Kansas by a hair under 2 points per game.

It's obvious you're so biased and uninformed about any other team besides Georgia. You should really do some research before you bash other teams, it'll save you some embarassment.

Well see what happens on New Year's day.

Hawaii Fan Checking In from Honolulu. Mr McIntosh are you realted to Mel Kuyper? You sound like his favorite nephew. Anyway, thank you for putting up the kind of article that will make great reading in the Hawaii locker room. Mel Kuyper, Colin Cowherd, and Tony Kornheiser may have done more than they will ever know to help the UH Warriors defeat the Washington Huskies and Boise Broncos. Thanks for being a part of the solution, and helping Hawaii players get really up for the Sugar Bowl. Muchos Mahalos Ya'll!

Hey Hawaii fan,

Just remember when a very similar team as yours (Boise State) came to the South with high expectations in 2005. Should I tell you what the final score was? Nah, look it up. Boise scored 10 points with the best offense in the nation.

Welcome to the dirty south "Rainbow Warriors"...the only rainbow you will be seeing in "Nawlins" is us pissing down your throats!

To DRU,

Way to advocate for retroactive abortion. I guess your language and sentiment is to be expected from a representative of the 'dirty south', but it adds nothing, other than a disturbing image, to a discussion you've obviously missed the point of.

It's a football game, not a skinhead rally. Get a life. You'll probably be too hung over to add a comment on January second about anything relating to Georgia's loss but I'll check in just in case.

Hey Christopher,

I understand your frustration in being left out of the Big Game and all. If the Dogs wanted to be there maybe they shouldn't have lost 2 games, maybe they should have won their conference title. As a fan I might be bitter as well except for the fact that they don't deserve a national title game.

I doubt you have ever watched a Hawaii game by the shrill sound of your comments. The offense is not a gimmick, June Jones ran it with success in the NFL. He was offered a 5 year contract w/ SD Chargers to run it, yet turned it down to take the Hawaii job for 10X less money. The Patriots run the same offense 80% of the time, and I don't hear anyone calling their offense a gimmick or a system.

There is a lot of pure football mojo in Hawaii. June coaches for the love of the game and the players play the game with passion. You will see this first hand in a few weeks.

The WAC might not be the SEC, but football is football.

Colt is not Timmy. Colt broke the NCAA passing record in 3 years. He is accurate and a gamer. He will dismantle the "famed Georgia defense".

By the way... The Hawaii defense is rated higher than the Dogs D. The only thing your running backs are going to get is a healthy dose of brick wall. Prediction; one of them doesn't even make it to the end of the game.

Another prediction; Hawaii 38, Georgia 24.

Happy New Year!

Go easy on the underrating brakes. You're going to wear them out. Hawaii beat Washington by 7. USC beat Washington by 3. Hawaii has found a way to win 5 road games this year in an undefeated season. In todays day and age, how hard is it to go undefeated? Ask Michigan about Appalachian State. Ask Kansas. Ask Mizzou.

As for your comment about the backdoor? 12-0 doesn't seem like the backdoor, or the sidedoor, or the basement door, or any other door than the front. An honest knock, on the front, patient, persistent, and unwavering in its sportmanship. Something you seem to have forgotten with your snide remarks.

May the best team win.

To: Christopher McIntosh

In response your article regarding how Georgia will run over a mile against Hawaii. I think it is untrue. Did you watch the Hawaii vs Washington game. Did you even realise that Hawaii was out with 2 starting safeties. Can you imagine when they are healthy come January? The defense has greatfully improved and if you have problems understanding it ask boise state or the rest of the conference. Furthermore, in regards to strength of schedule it doesn't matter. How many WAC teams has Georgia scheduled for? None right? So its a blind guess thinking the WAC as a none BCS conference and a homerun derby to happen. For your info we were 3 out of 4 in bowl games last year. Georgia's defense better step up because Hawaii is not considered the #1 offense in the nation for nothing. In fact bowl prediction for Hawaii is 54 to 28 Hawaii over Georgia. Reason is they are playing indoors with no wind and weather to stop this powerfull offense. It would be like arena football game. If Georgia wants to prove to the world that they belonged in the national title game, well they need to beat Hawaii atleast a good 14 points easily. I watched that game against Florida, where the whole team went out on the field for the 1st touchdown. That was the turning point to get the whole team fired up coming into the season. Hawaii on the other hand does that every week, right before the game. The Ha'a and Haka is Hawaii's way to hyped up. So by the moment when either Hawaii receives or defends, their game face is already there. Moreover, the advantage goes to Georgia because it is basically almost home turf. But its ok for Hawaii because they have played with the silent count so its even more pressure on Georgia fans to knock themself out screaming from the top of there lungs. Remember this Hawaii 12-0, and looking to repeat another WAC tradition. The same thing that Boise State did last year.

I know georgia might be bigger, i know they might be faster, but i know they ain't got the heart of the warriors. This team is a brotherhood, and although i don't know if we will win, i know we will compete.

You got shafted by the BCS, get over it or get in the back of the customer service line. They're busy at the moment, but they might hear your complaint before next year's bowl game. Hate the system, not the game you college football elitist... Do you grow tobacco(wait wrong century), or live part time in the Hamptons(isn't that New England)? Your parents must be loaded if you feel so entitled. If not, I hope you can show some of the humility I know your parents must have taught you. Grow up and make a decent argument.

Hey I agree the Dawgs got ripped off, but going after the Warriors is plain wrong. Need those of us in the WAC, a conference that didn't help dream up the most screwed up championship in NCAA sports, remind you big fans of the SEC and B"c"S that these are the rules your conferences help put into motion? Just so that you could protect your dollars and forget all about what collegiate sports are all about. Point the finger at yourself.

It's time for a playoff system. The whole Big 10 is over rated and the SEC just isn't that deep. Maybe you should just be happy that the USC didn't jump over you also. It seems every pundit agrees that they are the most feared team in the land. Perhaps Georgia should be in the Rose Bowl. Now there would be a game. And we should be in the Fiesta Bowl. Just who's bird brained idea was it to send us half way around the world and sent West Virginia to the desert? Just imagine if you were a Missouri fan. If we are going to keep this half-arsed system, then we need to publish who is voting and what their votes are.

If it helps; I think that both Georgia and Hawaii could beat Ohio State. Certainly both can beat Illinois!

As simple as it can be Hawaii, beat every opponent they were asked to play in 2007. Strength of Schedule or not shouldn't all the teams who play with Sagarin ranked 80-150 come out unbeaten?
Surely if that was the case then Hawaii's accomplishment's would of been moot.

But the fact of the matter is they have not. Hawaii is the only D-1 team undefeated?
Marquee wins -
-Does winning by 12 points over then ranked #17 Boise State who won the Fiesta Bowl last year not count?
-Does winning by 7 points over a Washington team (who plays in [sorry SEC], arguably one of the toughest conferences in football?) who gave a game to USC and Ohio State not count?
-What about tough conference opponents like Fresno St. The school that claims itself as the BCS Killer. Does that not count?
-Hmmmm. Lets not forget boasting the nation's longest winning streak? Starting when? Against who? Oh yeah. Once ranked #4 PAC-10 Powerhouse Arizona State.

So before Georgia fans start putting a stake on this game, just remember who wore black uniforms first. All talk aside, we will see who the better team come 2008.

The only thing "weak" about Hawaii's schedule is the stomach of BCS conference teams. Hawaii _tried_ to schedule at least three BCS teams, but they all, except Washington, backed out (including Michigan State who paid $250,000 to void an agreement). Well, I really shouldn't say "backed out": to back out, you have to be facing someone, and walking away, not running.

Would Hawaii be 12-0 in the PAC-10 or elsewhere? Probably not, but we'll never know until BCS teams start showing up. But as long it's the BCS teams who make Hawaii's schedule weak and NOT the actions of Hawaii's AD or June Jones, to decry Hawaii's record requires an incredible level of spinelessness and hypocrisy.

To those (eg. McIntosh) who make the laughable "argument" that Hawaii isn't good enough to play, answer one question: Why are Ohio State, Michigan and other BCS teams playing I-AA teams? Stop playing weak teams and play the mid-majors instead. Or are BCS teams afraid of losing some of those games? Troy was only one turnover away from beating Georgia, so fear is obviously the main reason the BCS avoids them.

BCS teams and their supporters should show up or shut up when non-BCS teams ask them to play. If you won't play (read: avoid) these teams when they ask for a game, you don't get to criticize them for their 12-0 records.

Georgia couldn't even win their own conference *subdivision*. They're a great team, but let's live on earth and not La La Land. No one schedules Hawaii because it's not worth the risk, putting up your team's reputation against a Hawaii team that has a striker's chance everytime it steps on the field. And Timmy Chang didn't make it in the NFL. So what? Are you telling me that every Georgia QB in the past 10 years is a starter in the NFL now?

Wow, more Hawaii fans that think they're going to absolutely crush UGA. Where have I seen this before? Oh yeah, every other sport site on the internet! Come on, Stafford and Richt have been so respectful to Hawaii. Stafford even said that Brennan was awesome! Has Hawaii given Georgia any accolades? Not that I've read.

Hawaii opponents records-53 wins and 92 losses

UGA opponents records-75 wins and 69 losses

That's right folks, UGA's opponents have had 22 more wins than Hawaii's. To think that Hawaii is going to waltz in and take UGA to the whipping post is insane. I'm not saying it won't be a close game-but Hawaii fans need to realize this isn't Washington or Boise State (a team that UGA creamed in 2005) 2 of the best teams Hawaii played all year! You Hawaii fans want to know how to stop the run and gun offense better be paying close attention come January 1st. Georgia doesn't just score points, they control the clock. Hawaii can't win if the offense isn't given the chance. You'll see.
