YOU, Flashlights

YOU! Yes, YOU! No, not you, the band YOU. You should seriously consider checking out YOU’s new album Flashlights.
On YOU’s third album, they find that delicate balance between lyrics and music. The album starts out with the song, “The Physics of Giving (Einstein Song).” Each word is saturated with soul and the music accompanies the words well.
The band is a fan of the reprise, the song “Moviekiss,” is reprised in the song that directly follows it, “...Now Everyone Knows...” Both addresses everyone’s desire to have a movie screen, fireworks going off, foot popping kiss.
Then there are the songs, “Glad” and “I Found You” and “Glad I Found You. Again.” “Glad,” is a mellow acoustic number that leads into the slightly sinister upbeat, “I Found You.” And, “Glad I Found You. Again,” is a forty-second reprise before the last track on the album. These callbacks are useful in making the album seem like a coherent whole instead of a collection of songs.
On this album, every song is different so it makes for a pleasurable aural experience. From the soulful first song they have a mix of acoustic, jazzy and sly rock. At times they sound like The Killers. But it’s not so much that it seems like they are copying other bands.
My favorite song on the album is, “Let It Go,” it’s heartfelt but upbeat. The song has a simple drumbeat and guitar rhythm, which fits perfectly with a voice that sounds on the brink of tears. As you can probably tell by the title, the song is basically about letting go of all the bad stuff, which isn’t bad advice. But putting it in the context of the song makes it special.
