Wednesday, Oct. 17, marks Global Day of Action Against Poverty which emphasizes the message of the ONE Campaign, an organization created by rock star Bono.
With last year’s record breaking involvement of over 23 million people in 87 different countries, Wednesday will once again show support for the Millennium Development Goals, which is a plan to halve extreme poverty worldwide by 2015.
In a society that has citizens who want to become more globally conscious, beneficial organizations all seem to be the same, but not ONE.
Campaigning to fight against not only poverty, but also AIDS, famine and other issues facing Africa and other developing countries today, ONE continues to stress individualism while it incorporates standing up for a positive cause and the betterment of others which ultimately bans its activists together.
Ads filled with celebrity supporters, white wristbands and a declaration of an historic pact to help the poorest people of the world, look to decrease the over one billion people who live on less than one dollar a day.
After gaining such great popularity among active Americans, ONE is standing at almost 2.5 million people.
Among the ways to get involved, contacting national officials, such as Congressmen, proves to be the most vital and one of the easiest ways to take action. Adding your face to ONE is highly encouraged. College students are incorporated specifically by the Campus Challenge and also to establish university chapters.
Using a system of points to get students to show their will to fight, Campus Challenge is set up in three stages and at the end of the challenge a reward is given to the winning college in form of a grant to fund their poverty-fighting program.
