College Football: Upsets Prove College Football Is The Best Football

If you’re a fan of college football, this past weekend could not have been any better. Upsets and Cinderella stories were the name of the game and that made for an unbelievable weekend.
The college football weekend began with an upset. That trend continued throughout the weekend, with five of the nation’s top 10 teams losing.
The first upset came at the hands of No. 18 South Florida, who defeated No. 5 West Virginia 21-13 last Friday.
Top 10 teams continued to fall over the weekend including Texas, Oklahoma and Rutgers. The madness ended with Auburn’s last second field goal to stun No. 4 Florida 20-17. This marked the second year in a row that Auburn has defeated Florida.
The top-ranked Trojans had to field an onside kick in the last seconds of their game to defeat unranked Washington 27-24.
Second-ranked LSU went into halftime with a 10-9 lead over Tulane, only to pull away in the second half.
This past weekend showed everyone why games are played on the field and not on paper.
After watching the wild Saturday in college football, I tried to watch some NFL football on Sunday, but I found myself incapable of staying on any game for too long.
There just didn’t seem to be any true enthusiasm except for Bret Favre passing Dan Marino as the all-time leader in touchdown passes.
The drama is lacking in the NFL. One loss in college football can mean the difference between a national championship and looking forward to next year. The stakes in the college game are so much higher and that makes for much better games and a much more exciting atmosphere.
For example, on Saturday I watched the Bulldogs run all over the Ole Miss Rebels in front of a packed out Sanford Stadium. There is not a team in the NFL that could continuously sell out a 92,000 seat stadium every weekend.
The fans were great and the game was even better. The fans knew that if Georgia lost the game, their chances of playing for a SEC championship were over.
One loss in the NFL doesn’t mean the end of the season like it does in college football.
The San Diego Chargers (1-3) still have the opportunity to go to the playoffs and win the Super Bowl. Sure, it makes it harder because of their record, but it’s not out of the question.
After watching this weekend’s games, it’s easy to see why college football is so much more fun and electrifying to watch. There is nothing like a college town on a Saturday afternoon in the heat of a national championship hunt.
Anything can happen on any given weekend and that’s what makes it great. That’s college football for you.
