Fashion Hits Athens With SERGE

A slight breeze and a clear sky must have been a good omen for The Go Bar’s first fashion show. The night’s weather was designed to let the crowd comfortably enjoy the display of original pieces in the Serge Collection, which consists of Genevieve Burgess, Kristen Ashley Cardell, Eva Hannan, Charlotte Hundley, and Jocelyn Negron Serge.
Before the show started, much thought was put into the surroundings. The lighting was meticulously set up to help the clothes shine. A sod runway was used, so shoes were not a requirement. And overhead the runway was lined with Christmas icicle lights. While the stage was still being perfected, the people piled into The Go Bar’s outside patio. Family members and friends were there to support this celebration of fashion, along with other members of the public. By 9:30 the crowd was spilling over into the street.
The music was only building the audience’s anticipation. When the show finally began, some of the crowd was unaware due to the low volume of the music. However, this did not detract from the beauty of Eva Hannan's collection.
Her original designs were very feminine. Minimalism was a theme throughout the pieces, and a gray dress stood out the most. Minimalistic design allowed for the clothing to flow freely as the models strutted down the runway, less muted than her color choices.
In between Eva’s designs and the next designer’s models going on, The Curl entertained the crowd with some surf rock. The music gave the crowd something to do while the next designer readied her models.
Charlotte Hundley highlighted many of her pieces with a zipper placed in a prominent position. She used strong colors, which made her pieces memorable. Most memorable was a black dress with a green fabric collar wrapped around the neck continuing down to the back of the dress. The dress was uniquely designed and completely wearable.
Next in line was Genevieve Burgess. The designs were tied together by either a belt or a collar. All of the clothing items emphasized the waist, allowing each model to have a perfect figure. Women around the world would agree that a perfect figure is something they continually search for, so Burgess scored well in her clothing designs.
Warm knits were a staple in Kristen Ashley Cardell’s collection. Her color palette was icy, yet there was a splash of warmth with gold colored pieces. A dress reminiscent of Pebbles from the Flintstones was the stand out dress of her collection, and maybe even the entire evening. Not only did the dress stand out, but she added a little flair to the runway by having her last model walk a golden retriever. The crowd’s general response to the puppy was an “awwwww."
Last on the list of designers was Jocelyn Negron. Jocelyn’s collection was the one that seemed most wearable. One dress was made of a shiny blue material which gave it an elegant touch. A sort of cape made from an army jacket strayed from the feminine feel the whole show had. The highlight of her collection was a navy women’s blazer. It was simple, yet very chic.
To get information on Charlotte Hundley’s designs you can email her at charh86@uga.edu. Her next collection will be available to Athens in January 2008. Genevieve Burgess can be reached at b.genevieve@gmail.com. Kristen Ashley Caldwell can be found on MySpace or by email at kristenashleyart@yahoo.com. For information on Jocelyn’s clothing you can go to her website, or if you are interested in purchasing her clothing it is available at Fortson’s and Agora. On November 1 Jocelyn's designs will also be available at Dynamite Clothing. All of these stores are in downtown Athens.
The Serge Fall Fashion show gave these women the chance to shine and that’s just what they did. A first time fashion show was a success for Serge and The Go Bar. Family members and friends were there to support this celebration of fashion. Hopefully Serge Collective will continue to host fashion shows because just as videographer Eddie Whelan said, “You know you don’t have to be in New York to do cool stuff."
