The Georgia Bulldogs will continue their tough SEC schedule this Saturday in Athens against the Ole Miss Rebels.
“Ole Miss is a very good football team. A year ago we barely survived them, they really outplayed us in my opinion,” said Georgia Head Coach Mark Richt. “I don’t think they will be any different this year as far as the physical nature goes. We have a lot of respect for Coach Orgeron and what he is trying to do, and last week’s game against Florida is evidence that they are not far away from getting that big signature win. We are just going to try to keep that from happening this week.”
While Coach Richt is planning to prevent a big win, the men from Oxford are scheming a sneak attack. “We could refer to last year’s game, but I don’t think it does us any good. And I think I need to be really careful of that,” Coach Ed Orgeron said this week. “We were playing Georgia at home. They look like a much improved team to me. I hope we can take them by surprise for sure.”
Last week, the Rebels gave the National Champion Florida Gators all they could handle and then some. The game ended in a comeback, last quarter 30-24 Florida win.
This will be the 43rd clash of Rebels vs. Bulldogs, dating all the way back to 1940. UGA leads the series 29-12-1 and has won the last seven contests. Last season, the then 10th-ranked Bulldogs pulled out a suspenseful 14-9 win in Oxford.
Three of the Rebels nine points from the 2006 match-up came off a blocked punt. “They exposed our punt protection like no one ever had. We had never had a punt blocked until that game and there was two that game, thankfully there was a penalty on one,” Coach Richt said. “Most of our players agree that last year was the most physical game we played.”
Brian Mimbs, junior punter for the Dawgs is ready for the challenge. “Operation is the key. We have to get the snap back there and protect,” Mimbs said. “I’ve got to get it off faster than I normally would because they are going to come for it and look for any advantage they can to get on us and they are going to come hard like they did last year since they were so successful.”
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday and will be covered by radio on 106.1 FM- The Ref in Athens.
