Mama's Boy: Some Art, Some Food

On Oak Street there is a restaurant called Mama’s Boy. From the outside it looks like it might be a rundown old diner; however, when you step inside it feels like you’ve stepped into an ultra chic diner. The basic color theme is black, teal, and silver. The back wall is covered with patterned wallpaper and the front of the place is a wall of windows which helps to brighten up your lunch or dinner.
On the furthest wall from the entrance is their current photography exhibit by Dozier Mobley. Most of these photographs are old NASCAR photos, which took me back to the days when my mom and I would bet 5 dollars on who would win the race. The pictures consist of family photos, portraits of the drivers (one of which I recognized to be Kasey Kahne), and a few of the car crashes. While you are gazing at the photos be sure to sit down and have a bite to eat.
Mama’s Boy offers a wide variety of food for lunch, dinner, and breakfast. The food choice that looked most appetizing for me at the lunch hour was the $5.95 half a sandwich, half a cup of the soup of the day and half a salad. I got a coconut Thai soup, Mama’s Boy salad with balsamic dressing and a ham sandwich on sour dough with cheese. My first bite was of the ham sandwich, which was to my surprise (and I’m not sure why) real ham, not the typical processed lunch meat.
Seeing as I can’t eat just one thing at a time I took a sample of my balsamic covered vegetable concoction, which was just what I like in a salad. The soup looked like some sort of carrot mixture. I excitedly took a spoonful of it to my mouth, expecting it to be a little bit spicy. I was not disappointed. I ate every thing on my plate and enjoyed every minute of the break I was getting from the UGA Food Services dining halls.
Just when I thought my stomach could hold no more I decided to get desert. What exactly my dessert was called escapes me, but it was basically a hot brownie with ice cream. The presentation of the desert was beautiful. My plate was lined with chocolate syrup sprinkled with powder sugar, and finished off with six slices of strawberry on the side. All of this meal was washed down with my water. The water came in a Mason jar, much like my grandmother used to can green beans, which added a down home feeling to the restaurant.
My taste buds gave Mama’s Boy approval. However, a little later as I was jogging around in my soccer class, my stomach started to disagree. Jogging and a big meal, no matter how good, do not mix.
