Love Drunks, Secret Squirrel, 3/04/06
by David Agee ![]() photo by Stephanie Martin Before going to the Secret Squirrel, I had already heard the buzz about great this bill would be. But anytime you have to walk through a dark alley behind a furniture rental store to see some bands, there will always be some uncertainty. From that starting point, I hesitantly traversed the hipster maze at a hipster hush-hush venue to see an Atlanta band that does much of its show promotion via their Myspace page. Maybe it was because I set my standards pretty low, or maybe it was because of vocalist Patrick A's huge sexy sunglasses in that dim basement, but whatever it was completely rocked my socks off. The Love Drunks did not begin their set by cautiously inviting listeners to gingerly saunter into the venue to hear the performance. Instead, they viciously grabbed indie kids by thrift store collars and dragged them in with a driving guitar, a flashy upright bass, talented drumming, and a vocalist with a stage personality that only stayed in the building because it was tethered by a microphone cable. ![]() photo by Stephanie Martin The Love Drunks describe their own sound as "blues inspired garage-punk." That description is an accurate one, and it is hard to miss the western/bluesy feel of the guitar and bass lines as they are blended seamlessly with the soul inspired vocal talent of a front man who can acutally dance (in a Mick Jagger, white boy way). This band’s music is not complicated by effects processors or creative time signatures; it's the kind of fun rock music that some people may have forgotten about.
