If you’re looking for a spot to kick back with a cold drink and a warm basket of chips, Mexicali Grille, or “Mexicali” as locals call it, is the perfect retreat. With three locations to choose from in the Athens area, this casual eatery has some tasty American-style Mexican items to satisfy your hunger.
As soon as you enter the West Broad Street location, it is apparent that this Athens hot spot attracts a younger crowd. Seating is available outside, but I chose an inside booth. Several clusters of tables sat in the middle of the restaurant packed with groups of college students.

Harry Bissett's: Cajun Taste In Downtown Athens

Louisiana-style Cajun and Creole cuisine can be found in the heart of downtown Athens, not far from The Arch.
Upon entering though Harry Bissett’s Greek column-framed door, one is instantly transported to a New Orleans, Louisiana restaurant. The décor inside of Harry Bissett’s New Orleans Café creates an atmosphere of elegant dining taken directly from the Crescent City.
The bar includes a display case which features Mardi Gras decorations and Jazz instruments. The restaurant also pays homage to Louisiana’s music by decorating the walls with the likenesses of Jazz musicians.

Named the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Restaurant of the Year in 2007, the low-key yet sophisticated eatery attracts a diverse crowd of diners ranging from college students to well-heeled local regulars.

Taco Stand has four locations: North Milledge at Prince Avenue, Downtown on East Broad, the Eastside on Barnett Shoals Road, and outside of Watkinsville, in Butler's Crossing.
The Mexican cuisine is a step up from Taco Bell. Do not let the inside or the outside deter you, the food is great. Patrons are diverse, ranging from students to townies.

Hey Ya’ll! For anyone who watches the Food Network, and a good many more, these words have instantly recognizable as the catchphrase of Southern-style chef Paula Deen.
Two-time Emmy winner Deen is the Savannah-based host of Paula’s Party and Paula’s Home Cooking, two Food Network shows that feature her unique Southern style. Often parodied for her refusal to make anything remotely healthy, Deen is well known for her love of butter, cheese and fried food. She works with her hands whenever possible and her reactions to eating her food are legendary.

5-hour Energy Drink: A Quick Bolt In Half The Time

“Feel it in minutes; lasts for hours,” is the slogan splashed across the distinctive miniature bottle of 5-hour Energy, advertised abundantly as an energy drink unlike anything currently on the market. While many consumers might expect this product to give the same, barely noticeable, effects as many other energy enhancers available, 5-hour Energy's results were surprisingly effective. As stated on that back, the “vitamin supplement” contains about as much caffeine as a cup of coffee, yet without the potent stale after-breath commonly associated with the usual caffeine fix.

Marti’s at Midday is a locally owned and operated café located down Prince Avenue. It’s hard to miss the small white cottage with green trim when you are driving down the road.

Red Bull Offers All-Natural Soda

Soft drink lovers, get ready! Red Bull is charging the cola industry. Already number one on the long list of competing energy drinks, Red Bull is now extending its product line to offer a 100% natural cola. This new product will represent the first major brand extension for the company since the introduction of sugar-free Red Bull in 2003.
The name of the newly introduced soft drink will be “Simply Cola," with a slogan of “Strong and Natural.” The Cola will contain 32 mg of caffeine in an 8 oz. can. The product will have slightly more kick than other sodas, with the main appeal being in its taste and the fact that it is all natural.

Kevin Cale's knees are starting to hurt. He's spent the better part of the afternoon kneeling on the cement floor of the garage at the Roots Farm in Winterville, Ga., carefully cleaning and sorting carrots. In a few days, these plump Boleros and long, sweet Mokums will be joining fresh meat, dairy, eggs, produce, honey and more at the site for Athens Locally Grown's weekly pick-up.
Athens Locally Grown, founded by Dan and Kristin Miller of Heirloom Organics in 2001, provides a way for Athens-area residents to easily find and buy locally-grown, seasonal organic foods. The variety found on the website is startling: lamb, honey, goat cheese, milk, eggs, oyster mushrooms, arugula, even homemade pet treats are all produced just outside the Classic City.

The Joy of Cooking: A Must-Own For Any Aspiring Chef

Plain-jane white and red cover facing forward on the bookshelf, the 75th anniversary edition of The Joy of Cooking is a far cry from most of the other star-filled, glossy photo-stocked cookbooks at the bookstore these days. It is a thick and heavy volume, and at first glance, seems unexciting and cumbersome.
The cover price lists it at $35, which is also more expensive than a lot of the aforementioned cookbooks, which could convince a kitchen queen – or king - to choose another set of recipes to try. That would be a mistake. After browsing the 4500 recipes and over 1000 pages in the new Joy, I have decided that, as Julia Child once said, this is the sole cookbook I would have if I could have no other.

Let’s face it. There are over 35,000 college students living in Athens…most without mothers to prepare a hot dinner every night. This lack of TLC has led most students to eat out for every meal or consume large amounts of pre-packaged foods, emptying their wallets and squandering their daily nutritional needs.
Luckily, there is a great solution to this problem: Crock pots. Also known as a slow-cooker, this small kitchen appliance should be in every apartment, loft or house in Athens.
Sadly, crock pots are overlooked most of the time, but are simple to use. It is as easy as 1-2-3: buy your ingredients; put them in the pot, and bam! Dinner. Just assemble in the morning before you go to class or when you are home for lunch, and then go about your day as normal. That’s it.

Earth Fare's Culinary Specialist Offers Cooking Classes To Athenians

Standing in front of his Artisan Breads cooking class at Earth Fare, Michael Perkins stirs a mixture of fresh yeast and water with the opposite end of a spatula. “No, we're not making French Baguettes today,” he says, dismissing them for their difficulty. “Baguettes can have up to three levels of funkiness.”
The classes usually begin at 6:30 on Wednesday nights and are always listed by date and theme on Earth Fare’s calendar, which is right inside the store’s front entrance.
